Background: Rigid contact lenses are commonly prescribed for various ocular conditions, but their use can lead to complications that affect wearer comfort and eye health. To find out the prevalence of contact lens-related complication rigid lens wearers in Specialty contact lens Clinic and analyze potential risk factors associated with complications.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved rigid lens wearers visiting the Specialty Contact Lens Clinic, either directly or by referral. Each wearer was interviewed about lens type, usage, wearing schedule, and care practices. Those with contact lens-related issues received a comprehensive eye exam, including vision assessment, slit-lamp examination, and fitting evaluation.
Results: The study was carried out on a total of 128 patients who came for a follow up to the Speciality contact lens clinic wearing gas permeable (GP) contact lenses where 51(39.84%) were female and 77(60.15%) were male. The prevalence of contact lens complications among GP lens wearers is 26.56%. Patients aged range from 20 to 60 years with an average of 33.00±14.00 years. (Median ±IQR). Poor wetting surface (11.76%), lens deposits-related issues (14.70%), and contact lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis (CLPC) (32.35%) were the most frequent complication.
Conclusion: The most common complication among rigid lens wearers is contact lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis. Important factors in reducing these issues include routine follow-up visits and thorough patient instruction on proper lens care.
